Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Identify loads, ratings and equipment serviceability related to four wheel drive vehicle recovery
  • Determine the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and estimate the recovery load on the vehicle using a recognised formula
  • Identify the rating and labelling of recovery gear
  • Identify rated recovery points on a vehicle
  • Determine the appropriate equipment to be used given the GVM, estimated recovery load and the equipment rating
  • Determine serviceability of recovery equipment required for task
  • Identify and follow work health and safety procedures, including selection and use of personal protective equipment relevant to recovery operations
  • Identify, assess and take actions to mitigate risks and hazards associated with recovery operations
  • Identify and implement workplace environmental protection procedures associated with recovery operations
  • Identify emergency procedures to follow in the event of accident or incident
  • Locate and survey site to determine recovery strategy and establishment of an exclusion zone
  • Inform appropriate personnel of location of vehicle to be recovered and recovery strategy

Element: Perform kinetic rope or strap recovery
  • Establish and maintain communications with appropriate personnel during recovery operation
  • Establish when and by what means to start and stop the recovery
  • Lay out the kinetic rope/strap prior to recovery
  • Fit the kinetic rope/strap to anapprovedrecovery point/device that is suitably rated for use with the strap
  • Demonstrate the joining of two kinetic ropes and/or straps
  • Identify where to place dampeners
  • Perform a safe recovery using the kinetic rope/strap

Element: Perform winch recovery
  • Establish and maintain communications with appropriate personnel during recovery operation
  • Establish when and how to start and stop the recovery
  • Lay out all the equipment to be used, including the dampeners
  • Perform winch recovery using a single line pull
  • Perform winch recovery using a double line pull using a snatch block or pulley ring
  • Perform winch recovery using a change of direction pull using a snatch block or pulley ring

Element: Use other recovery tools and equipment
  • Use a spade for vehicle recovery
  • Use traction boards for vehicle recovery

Element: Maintain vehicle recovery equipment
  • Clean, carry out operator maintenance, check serviceability and store recovery equipment after use according to manufacturer requirements
  • Record equipment maintenance according to workplace procedures

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
